recipe: homemade natural cold tea to increase milk supply

When I had Ayven, I felt like nursing took over my life!  I was stressed about not knowing when to pump, if I was pumping enough, if I would reach my goal of 1 year for nursing.  It’s like you become stuck in this tunnel where you can’t think about anything else.  I was constantly googling “how to increase my milk supply” desperately looking for something to triple the amount I was making.  Check out our post on six ways to increase your milk supply.

One thing I learned about nursing the second time around is that your stress level makes a HUGE impact on the amount of milk you make.  Relax your body and don’t push yourself too much because it will become unhealthy.  I know it is way easier said than done because even I find myself stressing at times with my second son.

So I was fortunate that my mom came to stay with me the first month my son was born.  She made me this natural tea at home that was amazing for my body.  This tea is supposed to help your cleanse your body, help get your stomach down and help increase your milk supply.  Guess what, it did all three of these for me!  Let’s just say with Ayven the first time I pumped I barely pumped out an ounce.  With my second son, I drank so much of this tea the first time I pumped, which was the 2nd week I had him, I pumped out 4oz!  I was simply amazed.

The Methi Seeds will increase your breast milk production, the Fennel seeds helps with lactation and is a great digestive aid for moms and prevents colic in babies.  It is not for babies, just through the breast milk and the Dill Seeds stimulate breast milk production.

top 7 uses for breast milk…other than feeding baby

breast milk

Laila is going to be one years old in a few weeks and soon, I will be ready to wean her off breast milk, (check out our post on weaning tips here). It got me thinking to how amazing this past year of breast-feeding was for her…and for the other ways I used her milk! As odd as it sounds, human breast milk has some interesting uses because of its natural antibodies, anti-infective, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Here are 7 uses for breast milk, other than feeding your little one:

1. Eye Infections/Ear Infections: I started to know there were other uses when Laila was just a month old, she had continuously had a clogged tear duct, and it would eye crusty over, something the doctor said would just go away on its own over time, but could take months. Times when it was worse, I felt so bad for her, even the drops the doctor prescribed didn’t always help. My friend recommended putting a drop of breast milk on it, and sure enough, it totally helped! It cleared up, and never came back, within only 1.5-2 weeks of me doing it almost every day when I would feed her. Pretty amazing, huh? I have heard it helps with ear infections also, but since Laila hasn’t had any, I haven’t personally tried that.

basic guidelines on breast milk storage and usage

Having a child is a full time job but breastfeeding is also another full time job that moms take on as 1 person.  Especially from a first time mom’s perspective you are so focused on making sure your child latches and the fact that you can breast feed, you don’t really think about all the other tasks related to breastfeeding like how to store the milk, how long can you keep it, how long can it stay out or how do you know if it has gone bad?  I personally was overwhelmed but was so blessed I had a sister in law who had just gone through the process so she gave me the 101 on how to take care of the milk.

Breast Milk Bags

I created a little checklist for myself so I wouldn’t have to keep googling during my 2 minutes of free time for those questions that come up all the time.

Basic guidelines on breast milk storage and usage

  • Milk is best stored in sterilized hard plastic containers, closed glass containers or milk storage bags.  **The milk storage bags can easily tear so keep them in a plastic container in your freezer
